Alan J. Hirsch, a 26-year-old from North Miami, Florida, went missing on February 24, 1984, under mysterious circumstances. On the evening of his disappearance, Hirsch and his friend Russ Rolnick took a 16-foot orange and white ski boat out from Coconut Grove after dining at Monty Trainer's restaurant. Witnesses reported that the two men appeared intoxicated, possibly under the influence of drugs.
Their boat was experiencing mechanical issues, including malfunctioning lights and a lack of fuel.
Shortly after leaving the restaurant, their boat ran out of gas. They managed to paddle to a nearby gas station, where Rolnick made a phone call to his ex-girlfriend, informing her he intended to be home by nightfall. However, neither Hirsch nor Rolnick made it home that evening, and they were never heard from again. An extensive search was conducted, covering over 11,000 square miles across three states, as well as the Atlantic and Caribbean waters, but no trace of the men or their boat was ever found.
Hirsch, a University of Miami graduate, was described as having brown hair and blue eyes, standing 5'9" and weighing around 140 pounds. He had a history of Quaalude use, a prescription sedative common in the 1970s and 1980s.
