In the winter of 1988, 61-year-old Ruby Geneva McClain was a patient at Crafts Farrow Hospital, a state psychiatric facility located in Columbia, South Carolina. On a day in mid-December, she was seen leaving the hospital on foot. Accounts vary on the exact date, citing either December 17th or 18th as the last time she was ever seen.
