In the early morning hours of May 4, 1989, 22-year-old Sargent Scott Micek vanished from South Bend, Indiana. He had been out for the evening, visiting at least two local bars. His night started around 10:00 p.m. at Cap 'n Cork, now known as Corby's Irish Pub, and later he was at the Bear's Den Tavern on North Michigan Street. Between 3:00 and 3:30 a.m., from a payphone at the Bear's Den, Sargent made two calls to his mother, asking for a ride home.
During the second call, he sounded anxious. His mother, who had been advised by her daughters not to pick him up in the past, instructed him to take a cab instead. This was the last time his family ever heard from him. At the time of his disappearance, Sargent was described as a white male with brown, curly hair, blue eyes, and freckles on his face. He stood at 5'7" and weighed approximately 165 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black leather jacket with "Western Southern" in white letters, a black shirt, and black pants. He also had a mustache and noticeable scars on both of his wrists from a previous suicide attempt.
The investigation into Sargent's disappearance has spanned decades, leaving his family with unanswered questions. Authorities believe that foul play was involved, and Sargent is presumed to be deceased. Over the years, various leads and tips have emerged, though none have led to a resolution. One tip suggested his body might be in a barrel in a quarry in Mishawaka, but a search yielded no results. Another piece of information that surfaced years later indicated that Sargent's driver's license had been checked in 1993 following a couple of DUI incidents, but this information did not lead to his whereabouts. More recently, in July 2020, new information led investigators to excavate a property on a farm in Berrien County, Michigan, outside of Coloma, but the search for remains was unsuccessful. A friend of Sargent's reportedly stated that they saw him get into a dark or cream-colored Lincoln sedan with two other individuals on the night he disappeared.
The enduring pain of not knowing what happened to their son and brother has been a heavy burden for Sargent's family. His mother has kept the same phone number for over three decades, holding onto a sliver of hope that he might one day call. The case remains an active investigation with the South Bend Police Department.
