Lila Buerattan, a 35-year-old exotic bird breeder, was last seen on June 2, 1994, in Loxahatchee, Florida, where she operated a ranch alongside her nephew, Moses Lall. They were both involved in breeding and selling exotic birds, a business that transitioned from importing birds from Guyana after U.S. restrictions tightened in 1993. Lila was primarily responsible for the care of the birds, while Moses handled the business side.
The mystery of their disappearance came to light when a feed delivery man arrived on June 5, 1994, and noticed that the ranch was deserted. The delivery went unclaimed for days, and authorities were eventually notified. When investigators arrived on the scene ten days later, they found a tragic situation: hundreds of birds on the ranch had died or were near death due to starvation, valued at nearly $700,000. There was no sign of Lila, Moses, or two ranch hands, Hari Gobin and Roland Eyoum.
Further investigation revealed disturbing clues. Eyoum was later found in New York and claimed Gobin had told him that two men had forced Lila and Moses into a van at gunpoint. Gobin himself was apprehended in Georgia on June 7 but disappeared after briefly being held. Authorities remain suspicious of Gobin, but no conclusive evidence has surfaced. Despite the exhaustive search and various leads, Lila Buerattan’s case remains unsolved, with foul play heavily suspected.
