James J. Arthur, a 67-year-old U.S. military veteran, went missing on July 28, 2008, during a solo hiking and fishing trip in the Sierra National Forest, California. Arthur had informed his family that he planned to visit Star Lakes, with a stop in Big Sandy for lunch, before returning home later that day.
