James J. Arthur, a 67-year-old U.S. military veteran, went missing on July 28, 2008, during a solo hiking and fishing trip in the Sierra National Forest, California. Arthur had informed his family that he planned to visit Star Lakes, with a stop in Big Sandy for lunch, before returning home later that day. However, when he did not return, an extensive search was initiated.
His dark blue Dodge Ram truck was found near the entrance to Iron Lakes, approximately 14 miles southeast of Star Lakes, but there was no sign of Arthur.
Two hikers reported seeing Arthur resting on a steep trail toward Iron Lakes. He was last seen wearing a light jacket, orange t-shirt, blue jeans, and a straw hat, and was carrying a cane, a camera, and possibly a pistol loaded with snake shot. Despite a large-scale search, no further trace of him was found, and his disappearance remains unsolved. Arthur, a retired lieutenant colonel with the Air National Guard, was well-regarded and had no known history of health issues that could explain his sudden disappearance. His case is still open and classified as a missing person under suspicious circumstances.
