On May 3, 2012, a 21-year-old man named Pablo Murillo Alcaraz vanished in the rushing waters of the Rogue River near Union Creek, Oregon. In a harrowing moment witnessed by his own family, Pablo was seen standing along the riverbank, where he removed his shirt and shoes. The smooth rocks, slick with moisture, offered no firm footing, and he suddenly slipped, falling into the frigid river. The river, swollen and swift from the spring runoff, immediately pulled him into its powerful current. His family caught one last, fleeting glimpse of his head above the turbulent surface before he was swept over a steep, twelve-foot waterfall and disappeared from sight. The area where Pablo was last seen is notoriously treacherous. Below the waterfall, the river carves deep undercuts into the banks and creates strong, swirling eddies. The water is littered with large, submerged rocks and countless unknown hazards hidden beneath the churning, opaque surface. The turbulence of the water made visibility almost zero, severely hampering any chance of an immediate recovery. At the time he fell into the water, he was wearing only a pair of blue jeans. Immediately following the incident, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office initiated an extensive search operation. Search and Rescue teams were deployed, meticulously combing both sides of the riverbank for a distance of approximately seven miles downstream from the waterfall. Despite their dedicated and thorough efforts, the search yielded no sign of Pablo. The dangerous river conditions, combined with the remote and rugged terrain, presented immense challenges to the search teams. The overview of the case is that of a tragic accident where a young man was lost to a powerful river, and despite a significant search and rescue effort, he was never found.
