In the autumn of 1961, a young mother of six, 26-year-old Maxine Beatrice Green, vanished from the small town of Pawhuska, Oklahoma. The exact date of her disappearance is noted as October 30, 1961. At the time, she was recently divorced from Hobart Jess Green, the father of her children. The circumstances immediately preceding her disappearance were fraught with tension, as Hobart was due in court for failing to pay child support just a week after she was last seen. Initially, many in the community believed that Maxine, who had recently cashed a welfare check, had chosen to leave on her own. However, as time passed with no word, concern for her well-being grew, leading authorities to drag Bird Creek, a search that ultimately yielded no clues. Decades later, the narrative of Maxine's disappearance took a dark and disturbing turn. In 1986, a chilling testimony emerged from one of Maxine and Hobart's daughters, Norma. Her long-suppressed memories resurfaced following her father's conviction for the murder of his infant son from another relationship. Norma recounted a terrifying night in 1961 when Hobart appeared at their home. She stated that her father forced her, her younger sister, and their mother into a car where his girlfriend was waiting. They were driven to a swinging bridge over Bird Creek, where Hobart allegedly dragged Maxine from the vehicle and a violent struggle ensued. Norma witnessed her father brutally assault and ultimately choke her mother until she was motionless. According to Norma's account, her mother's body was then placed in a hole near the creek. Despite this harrowing eyewitness account, the case of Maxine Green's disappearance remains unresolved. Following Norma's revelations in 1986, authorities were skeptical, as the area she indicated had been previously searched. A private investigator hired by the daughter later conducted a dig at the alleged burial site, uncovering only animal bones and some dress buttons. The investigation into Maxine's disappearance has largely been stalled since 1991. Her ex-husband, Hobart Green, was also looked at in connection with another disappearance, that of 16-year-old Cynthia Kinney in 1976, though his involvement was never confirmed. The case of Maxine Beatrice Green is a haunting story of a young mother who vanished amidst a backdrop of domestic turmoil and whose fate, despite the horrifying account of her own child, remains officially unknown.
