Hartanto Teguh Santoso, a 31-year-old male, was last seen at his Kirkland, Washington, apartment on the evening of February 19, 2001. An immigrant from Indonesia, he had moved to the United States about five years prior and was working as a nursing assistant, diligently sending money back home to support his family. On the night he vanished, residents of the Four Cedars Apartments in the 10000 block of NE 117th Ct reported hearing disturbing sounds around 10:45 p.m. These noises included the shattering of glass, loud banging and thumping, and multiple screams. Shortly after, at approximately 11:00 p.m., a car was heard speeding away from the complex. The scene at Santoso's apartment was grim; the front door was ajar, a cinder block had been thrown through a window, and blood was discovered both inside and outside the residence, indicating a violent struggle had taken place. The investigation into Hartanto's disappearance quickly uncovered more unsettling evidence. The day after he was last seen, his car was found in the parking garage of the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. A parking receipt inside the vehicle was time-stamped at 11:51 p.m., just over an hour after the commotion was heard at his apartment. A significant amount of Santoso's blood was found inside the car. Authorities checked flight manifests and found no indication that he had boarded a plane, and his passport was never used after his disappearance. The volume of blood found at his apartment and within his vehicle led investigators and forensic experts to a somber conclusion. Based on the evidence, it was determined that he could not have survived the injuries he likely sustained. In June 2002, Hartanto Santoso was legally declared deceased. The case pointed towards foul play from the beginning, and the investigation eventually focused on a former friend, Kim Heichel Mason. The evidence presented during the trial was compelling enough to lead to a conviction. In July 2003, Mason was found guilty of aggravated first-degree murder in connection with Hartanto's disappearance and presumed death. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Despite the conviction, a crucial piece of the puzzle remains missing. Mason has consistently refused to cooperate with law enforcement to reveal the location of Hartanto Santoso's remains, leaving his family without the closure of a proper burial. The case is a tragic story of a man who came to the United States seeking a better life, only to have it violently cut short, with his body still missing to this day.
