In the small city of Carbon Hill, Alabama, a family was forever changed by the events of January 13, 2011. On that Thursday, 25-year-old Erik Thomas Ruiz was seen by his girlfriend for what would be the last time. During their meeting, he gave her money to add minutes to his cell phone and to buy groceries.
