In the summer of 2011, concern grew for Sylviane Finck Lozada, a 51-year-old Belgian-born teacher living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, when her daily calls to her family in Belgium abruptly stopped. The last time they heard her voice was on July 5, 2011. Known for her dedication as a French and Spanish teacher at Brusly High School, Sylviane was described by those who knew her as a sweet, intelligent, and caring soul. When days turned into weeks with no word, her family's worry intensified, leading them to report her missing on July 18 of that year. Investigators from the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office began to piece together a timeline that quickly pointed toward a disturbing conclusion. They learned that Sylviane's marriage to Oscar Lozada was troubled, with records of domestic disputes in the months leading up to her disappearance. On two occasions in December 2010, deputies were called in response to arguments, one of which resulted in Sylviane seeking hospital treatment for an injury she said was caused by her husband pushing her down. The focus of the investigation soon centered on Sylviane's husband, Oscar. Detectives discovered that just a day after Sylviane was last heard from, Oscar purchased multiple five-gallon buckets and bags of concrete mix, items that were never found. Four days after her last contact with family, on July 9, Oscar and the couple's young daughter boarded a flight to his native Venezuela, with a scheduled return on July 14 that they never made. As law enforcement delved deeper, the family's home on Springlake Drive revealed grim evidence of a violent struggle, including blood found in the garage. With Oscar and their daughter out of the country, and the growing physical evidence, authorities began to suspect foul play was involved in Sylviane's vanishing. Friends and colleagues, knowing Sylviane's deep devotion to her daughter, were certain she would never have willingly left her. For years, the case remained in a painful limbo for Sylviane's loved ones. Oscar Lozada remained in Venezuela, a country that does not extradite its own nationals, leaving investigators with a person of interest they could not question. A significant breakthrough finally came in September 2018 when Oscar was located and arrested in Mexico and subsequently deported to the United States to face charges. Their daughter was safely reunited with Sylviane's family in Belgium. After his arrest, Oscar Lozada confessed to the horrific details of his wife's death. He admitted that during an argument, he strangled Sylviane to death. He then dismembered her body in their garage, placed her remains in buckets filled with cement, and discarded them in various bodies of water along Interstate 10. In February 2023, after a week-long trial, Oscar Lozada was found guilty of second-degree murder and obstruction of justice and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Sylviane Lozada's body has never been recovered, leaving a void for her family and the community that admired her, but the conviction of her husband brought a long-awaited measure of justice to a case that began with a silent phone line.
