On a winter day in Port Orford, Oregon, 37-year-old Albert Glenn Self Jr. was aboard a 24-foot fishing vessel in the Pacific Ocean near a place called Paradise Point. It was January 25, 2015, and he was with two other people when the boat encountered treacherous conditions. The small recreational boat was caught between large ocean swells and crashing surf when it suddenly flipped over, plunging all three individuals into the cold water. While his two companions, one of whom was wearing a life vest, managed to fight their way through the surf and make it to the shore, Albert was last seen struggling in the water. It is believed he was not wearing a life vest. The harrowing event was witnessed by a couple who were walking on the beach. They immediately called for help at approximately 1:45 p.m. and, along with other beachcombers, rushed to assist the two survivors who reached the shore. Tragically, no one was able to reach Albert before he disappeared from sight. The United States Coast Guard, along with the Coos County Sheriff's Office and other local law enforcement, quickly responded to the scene. An extensive search was launched to find Albert. Despite the urgent and thorough efforts of the rescue teams, no trace of Albert was found. The Coast Guard searched for nine hours, covering an area of over 169 miles of the ocean. The following day, with no new developments, the official search was suspended. Deputies also conducted searches along the coastline using all-terrain vehicles, but these efforts also proved unsuccessful. The case of Albert Self Jr. remains an unresolved and sorrowful chapter for the community of Port Orford, a place where the unpredictable nature of the sea can lead to such devastating outcomes. The official record describes him as having gone overboard, and despite the immediate and comprehensive search and rescue operations, he was never located, leaving his family and loved ones without answers.
