Crystal Rogers, a 35-year-old mother of five from Bardstown, Kentucky, was last seen on the evening of July 3, 2015. Her boyfriend, Brooks Houck, with whom she lived, stated he last saw her at their home playing games on her phone before he went to sleep. The following day, after she was unreachable, her family grew concerned and began searching for her. On July 5, her mother officially reported her missing.
That same day, her car, a red Chevrolet Impala, was discovered abandoned with a flat tire at mile marker 14 on the Bluegrass Parkway. Inside the vehicle were her keys, cell phone, and purse.
The investigation into Crystal's disappearance quickly focused on her boyfriend, Brooks Houck, who was named the main suspect in the case. His brother, Nick Houck, a Bardstown police officer at the time, was fired for interfering with the investigation after he allegedly contacted his brother during a police interview and advised him to stop talking. The case remained without significant progress for years, a period tragically marked by the unsolved shooting death of Crystal's father, Tommy Ballard, in November 2016. Tommy had been a vocal advocate for his daughter and was actively investigating her disappearance. In August 2020, the FBI took over the investigation, conducting numerous searches, including at properties owned by the Houck family. These renewed efforts led to a major breakthrough in 2023 with the indictment of Joseph Lawson on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and tampering with physical evidence. This was followed by the arrest of Brooks Houck, who was charged with murder and tampering with physical evidence. A third man, Steve Lawson, Joseph's father, was also arrested and charged in connection to the case.
Despite extensive searches, Crystal Rogers' body has never been found, and she is presumed dead. In 2025, Brooks Houck was convicted of murder and tampering with physical evidence and was sentenced to life in prison. Joseph Lawson was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and tampering with physical evidence and sentenced to 25 years in prison, while his father, Steve Lawson, received a 17-year sentence for similar charges. The disappearance of Crystal Rogers is one of several unsolved cases that have troubled the Bardstown community, including the murders of police officer Jason Ellis, and a mother and daughter, Kathy and Samantha Netherland.
