In the autumn of 2015, the life of a family from Suffolk, Virginia, was irrevocably altered. On November 11, 30-year-old Quantez Demont Russell, a man known to his loved ones as Tazz, was last seen at his home on Forest Street. He was a father who was deeply involved in his young son's life and a brother who spoke to his sibling daily, making his subsequent silence all the more alarming.
Russell, a Black male standing at 6'2' and weighing around 170 pounds, had several distinguishing tattoos, including 'TAZZ' on one arm and 'CMP BULLET' on the other, as well as a visibly deformed pinkie finger from a childhood injury. On the day he vanished, he was reportedly wearing a gray shirt, blue jeans, and a red hat, and left his city with the intention of traveling to the nearby city of Newport News. He has not been seen or heard from since that day. The lack of contact was highly uncharacteristic for the lifelong Suffolk resident whose entire family lived in the city.
The initial hours of his disappearance were filled with confusion and fear. That same evening, Russell's mother received a harrowing phone call from a friend who had heard a rumor that her son had been shot in the East End area of Newport News. She rushed to the city to search for him but found no trace, and police confirmed they had not received any reports of gunfire that night. The following day, a significant clue emerged when Russell's silver Lexus was discovered abandoned at a gas station in Newport News. Some of his personal belongings were found inside the car, but Russell was gone. Investigators came to believe that someone other than Russell had left the vehicle there. The mystery deepened as his cell phone and car were later found to be in the possession of another individual, who eventually turned them over to Russell's girlfriend. This person reportedly made conflicting statements, telling acquaintances he saw Russell 'take his last breath,' but later denying to police that he was at the scene of any shooting.
As time stretched on without answers, the family's hope dwindled, replaced by tormenting uncertainty. A particularly cruel twist in the case came on July 5, 2016, what would have been Russell's birthday. His mother received a disturbing, anonymous phone call from a woman who claimed Russell had been shot twice in the back of the head, his hands and feet bound, before his body was thrown from a bridge into the James River. This tip prompted a three-day search of the river, but nothing was ever found. Russell's mother has stated her belief that his disappearance is linked to his involvement in the Bloods gang, which she said he joined in the eighth grade. Unverified accounts suggest Russell may have been shot after attempting to steal drugs, guns, and money from a house, then beaten and put into the trunk of a car before being shot again and thrown into the water. Though foul play is strongly suspected in his disappearance, no one has ever been charged. After years of agonizing waiting, the family filed for a death certificate in 2022, and Quantez Russell was legally declared deceased on March 26, 2024.
