Four days later, on December 17, when responders were once again called for a welfare check, he was gone. The days and weeks that followed Brandon's disappearance were marked by an intensive search effort. Volunteers, alongside the Alaska State Troopers and a trained rescue dog, scoured the challenging terrain surrounding his cabin. The area, characterized by muskeg and brush, was difficult to navigate, and the search was further hampered by snow and cold weather. Over 1,000 man-hours were dedicated to the search, utilizing all-terrain vehicles and boats to cover as much ground as possible. Despite these exhaustive efforts, including a thorough grid search of the area, no trace of Brandon was found. The active official search was eventually suspended on December 29, 2015, pending any new leads. The lack of any evidence or contact from Brandon led to a somber conclusion. In April 2016, a Wrangell jury reached a presumptive death verdict, allowing his family to obtain a death certificate. The court heard testimony from those involved in the extensive search, which highlighted the challenging conditions and the comprehensive nature of the operation. It was presumed he had succumbed to exposure on or around December 14, 2015. Though the official search was called off, friends, family, and community members continued to look for him. The case remains a painful memory for the community of Wrangell, a stark reminder of the unforgiving nature of the Alaskan wilderness and the lingering sorrow of a man who seemingly vanished into it.
