On June 22, 2016, 22-year-old Shannah Boiteau of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, vanished under distressing circumstances while traveling out of state. She was in a vehicle with her boyfriend, reportedly on their way to California so she could see the ocean, when an argument broke out between them. Near Interstate 94 and County Road 74 in St. Cloud, Minnesota, Shannah got out of the car and ran into a wooded area.
She was last seen wearing a tan tank top and black leggings, and had no shoes with her. At the time, authorities noted that she did not have a cell phone and likely did not know anyone in the St. Cloud area. Shannah had distinctive tattoos, including the name "Milli" behind her right ear and two sparrows on her hips.
The initial investigation into Shannah's disappearance was complex. Authorities believed she may have initially fled Wisconsin to avoid an arrest for a probation violation. Her boyfriend, the last person known to have seen her, reported her running from the vehicle. In the days and weeks that followed, searches were conducted in the area where she was last seen, but they yielded no trace of the young mother. Her family was left with a note she had left in her kitchen explaining the trip to California. For years, her case remained cold, with no confirmed sightings or significant leads to indicate what had happened to her after she ran into the woods.
After nearly nine years of uncertainty, a breakthrough in the case brought a sad resolution. On April 26, 2025, a property owner in the 25000 block of County Road 74 discovered skeletal remains on his land, not far from where Shannah was last seen. The Midwest Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed the remains belonged to Shannah Boiteau. Following the discovery, her family, who had maintained a Facebook page dedicated to finding her, announced the heartbreaking news, stating she had "gained her angel wings".
