Charlene Roxanne Voight, a 36-year-old woman who had recently graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a degree in landscape architecture, moved to Littleton, Colorado, from Southern California in the early summer of 2016. She made the move to be with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Jeffrey Scott Beier. Her family last had a phone conversation with her on June 29, 2016, and after not hearing from her for over a week, which was highly uncharacteristic, they reported her missing on July 8, 2016. Witnesses last saw Charlene on the night of June 30, 2016, at the Littleton apartment she shared with Beier. That evening, Beier was seen hitting Charlene and was also accused of sexually assaulting a female guest. This guest was one of the last people to see Charlene alive.
The investigation into Charlene's disappearance quickly focused on Beier. Her car was discovered abandoned in a dirt lot near their apartment, on property that Beier had purchased just days before she went missing. During a search of the couple's apartment, investigators found suspicious blood spatter on a headboard, noted a missing mattress, and discovered that a section of the carpet had been removed. A few days after Charlene was reported missing, Beier was arrested for the sexual assault that allegedly occurred on the night of her disappearance, though these charges were later dropped to avoid compromising the ongoing investigation into her vanishing. The relationship between Charlene and Beier had a documented history of domestic violence, with Charlene having previously filed for a restraining order against him, stating she was 'scared for her life.' The investigation also revealed that in the days following her disappearance, Beier withdrew a large sum of cash, bought lighter fluid, and visited both an abandoned farm and a landfill in Commerce City. This led to a four-month search of the landfill, where some of Charlene's personal belongings and the body of her deceased dog were found, but not Charlene.
In August 2019, an Arapahoe County grand jury indicted Jeffrey Beier on multiple charges, including first-degree murder, in connection with Charlene's death. However, by this time, Beier had already fled the country. He moved to Russia in November 2016, where he later married and had a child. In 2020, Beier was taken into custody in Russia on unrelated charges but was later released and has never been extradited back to the United States to face the charges against him. The case remains a haunting one, as Charlene's body has never been recovered, and the man accused of her murder has yet to stand trial in a U.S. courtroom. The Littleton Police Department continues to seek information from the public that could bring justice for Charlene and closure for her family, who are left to mourn the loss of their daughter and sister without the chance to lay her to rest.
