Elvira Rivera Babb, aged 57, was last seen on June 29, 2016, in Vallejo, California, when a coworker dropped her off at a local fish market. The following day, on June 30, her son received a text message demanding $60,000 for her safe return, threatening to kill her if the ransom was not paid. Initially, her son thought the message was a prank, but when he went to check her home, he found her Chihuahua dead and Elvira missing, with no signs of forced entry.
Elvira, a Filipina immigrant, worked in an orthotics lab and had recently filed for bankruptcy, which made her an unlikely target for a ransom kidnapping. Four suspects, including Emmanuel Espinoza, who knew Elvira, were arrested in connection with her disappearance. In August 2016, Espinoza was charged with her murder, but the other suspects had their charges reduced or dropped. Despite the arrests, Elvira has never been found and is presumed dead.
