A member of the Lumbee community, Billy was last seen in Lumberton, North Carolina, on November 26, 2016. Investigators learned that he was last believed to have been in the Warwick Mill Road area and was possibly seen getting into a car with four other men. The investigation into Billy's disappearance was extensive, with law enforcement conducting dozens of interviews and searches that even extended out of state. In April 2022, more than five years after he vanished, the search came to a tragic end when the remains of Billy Gene Hammonds were found buried in the backyard of a home. The remains were sent to the North Carolina Medical Examiner's Office for official identification and to determine the cause of death. His death was classified as a homicide, bringing a painful and heartbreaking conclusion to his family's long search.
