She was accompanied by an older friend with whom she resided. The pair reportedly left the family home with the stated intention of visiting Darlene's grandmother, who lived in another part of town.
They never reached their destination, and what began as a holiday visit turned into a decades-long mystery.
The initial days following their departure were filled with a false sense of hope for Darlene's family. They believed she would return, especially since she had left behind the clothing she had packed for the trip. This hope turned to deep concern when, a few days later, the rental car the pair had been using was discovered abandoned in a parking lot. The vehicle was found at South of the Border, a well-known tourist attraction located off Interstate 95, just across the state line in South Carolina. The discovery of the car offered no immediate signs of foul play, but a couple of items found inside were both puzzling and alarming.
Inside the abandoned rental car, investigators found a bag of cocaine and a belt buckle bearing the emblem of the 'Outlaws' motorcycle gang.
