His appearance was further distinguished by several tattoos, including the initials of his children—EBT, JPT, and DTT—on his chest, the word 'Life' tattooed on the inside of his lip, and a tattooed ring on his ring finger, among numerous other pieces of body art. He also had a scar on his left cheek near his mouth and piercings in his ears, nose, and penis. The vehicle he was driving, a gray 1997 Saturn SL sedan with Tennessee license plate A8418T, also possessed a distinguishing feature: one of its front fenders was missing. Neither Thornburg nor his vehicle have been located since the day he went missing.
The Catoosa County Sheriff's Office opened an investigation into Thornburg's disappearance, with Detective Freddie Roden assigned to the case.
