In the spring of 2017, concern grew for 28-year-old Daniel "Danny" Oberg, a resident of Sweet Home, Oregon. He was last definitively seen on April 23, 2017. Surveillance footage from a Safeway grocery store in Sweet Home captured images of him at 12:43 p.m. that day. He was in the company of at least one other man inside the store, while another man waited in his car with his two dogs. After leaving the store, Daniel, his car, and his dogs seemingly vanished. His family reported him missing on April 25th after he failed to return home and they were unable to contact him, which they described as being highly out of character. Daniel was known to be a frequent visitor of the Quartzville Recreation Corridor in Linn County. The investigation into Daniel's disappearance began with the Lane County Sheriff's Office after the car he had been driving was found abandoned. The vehicle was discovered stuck in the mud on a hillside off Marcola Road. A significant detail in the early days of the search was the recovery of both of his dogs, Misa and Koda, in the Marcola area. This discovery prompted extensive searches by Lane and Linn County Search and Rescue teams in the rugged terrain near where the car was found. Despite the use of ground searchers and K9 units, these efforts did not yield any clues as to Daniel's whereabouts. Investigators from both Lane and Linn county sheriff's offices have interviewed numerous people who knew Daniel and were thought to have been with him around the time he disappeared. Over the years, the search for Daniel has continued, with law enforcement following up on any tips received. His family and friends have held vigils, hoping to keep his case in the public eye and appealing for anyone with information to come forward. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain unclear. While there were initial thoughts that he may have gone camping, his father disputed this, stating that Daniel had purchased camping gear for future trips and all of it was found in his room. The case involves multiple jurisdictions, as he was last seen in Linn County, but his car and dogs were found in Lane County. The investigation has faced challenges due to the dense and difficult terrain in the search areas. The overarching question of what happened to Daniel Oberg after he left the Safeway that day remains unanswered, leaving a painful void for his loved ones.
