Everett Ruess, a 20-year-old artist and poet, disappeared on November 20, 1934, near Escalante, Utah, while exploring the rugged landscapes of southern Utah. Known for his love of nature and solitude, Ruess had been traveling alone through remote wilderness areas, writing letters and documenting his experiences. He was last seen by two sheepherders who gave him directions toward the Kaiparowits Plateau, a remote region of canyons and desert.
