In the early morning hours of New Year's Eve in 1972, 42-year-old Betty Dyer vanished from Mansfield, Ohio. She was a beautician and a widowed mother of six, living with two of her children at the time. That morning, around 6:00 a.m., she was at the Park Avenue East Laundromat. What should have been a routine chore turned into a mystery that has spanned decades. Her car was later found parked outside the laundromat, and inside the vehicle were her neatly folded, clean clothes. There was no sign of Betty Dyer, and she has not been seen or heard from since. The disappearance of Betty Dyer was immediately concerning to her family and the community. Local law enforcement began an investigation, but the case quickly grew cold due to a lack of significant leads. At the time of her disappearance, she was described as a white female with red hair and blue or blue/green eyes, standing between 5'2" and 5'5" tall, and weighing between 115 and 125 pounds. She was reportedly wearing a brown suede car coat, brown pants, and brown loafers with tassels. It was also noted that she wore a full set of dentures. Years later, a significant development in the case occurred. In 1995, a man named Lawrence Davis, who was already serving a prison sentence in Louisiana for rape and murder, pleaded no contest to manslaughter in connection with Betty Dyer's death. Authorities had considered him a suspect early in the investigation. In August 1972, just months before Dyer went missing, Davis had been charged with the abduction of two sisters from a Mansfield laundromat. He was out on bond awaiting trial for that incident when Betty Dyer disappeared. As part of his plea deal, Davis led authorities to a wooded area where he claimed a friend had killed Dyer and that he had helped dispose of her body. Despite his confession to being involved, a search of the area he indicated did not lead to the discovery of her remains. Lawrence Davis was sentenced to twenty years in prison for his role in Dyer's case, a sentence that ran concurrently with his existing one in Louisiana. To this day, Betty Dyer's body has never been found, and her case remains a painful and unresolved chapter for her family who continue to hope for answers.
