Scott Murray Campbell, 27, was last seen on April 16, 1982, in Anaheim, California. On that day, Campbell had arranged to meet two men, Lawrence "Larry" Cowell and Donald Dimascio, to fly to Fargo, North Dakota. However, instead of heading east, the private plane flew west over the Pacific Ocean. Investigators later uncovered that Campbell was likely killed during the flight, with authorities speculating that his body was thrown into the ocean near Catalina Island.
The motive behind the crime was believed to be a drug-related robbery, and both Cowell and Dimascio were implicated in Campbell's death.
Campbell's car, a Pantera sports vehicle, was found in Cowell's possession, and Cowell was in the process of stripping and selling its parts. Cowell and Dimascio were subsequently arrested and convicted for Campbell's murder. Cowell was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison, while Dimascio received life without parole.
