Howard Tokarsky, aged 45, disappeared on December 14, 1984, in Los Angeles, California. That day, Tokarsky, a resident of Granada Hills and operations manager of a Sylmar chemical company, left work early, telling his wife and colleagues that he was headed to the desert for target practice. He never returned, sparking an enduring mystery.
His red and white Ford Bronco was discovered later that evening behind a market on the outskirts of Mojave, California, about 100 miles north of Los
Angeles. The vehicle was unlocked, and the keys remained in the ignition, though four-wheel drive was engaged, which was unnecessary for the terrain. Inside the car, police found Tokarsky's wallet—stripped of money but still containing identification and credit cards—and various personal belongings, including a pistol. His glasses were also found broken in the vehicle. However, a rifle and a second pistol he had brought along were missing.
Despite extensive searches in the surrounding area, no trace of Tokarsky was ever found. Authorities suspected foul play due to the unusual state in which his vehicle was left and the missing firearms.
