In the winter of 1989, a young man named Livingstone Kiniaru Njoroge, a 32-year-old student from Kenya, vanished from the small town of Hesston, Kansas. He had journeyed to the United States in February 1987 with the hope of furthering his education at Hesston College, a small school affiliated with the Mennonite Church.
