In the spring of 1990, a 37-year-old woman named Penny Yvonne Peeler was living in the area of Enid, Oklahoma, when her life took a turn that remains shrouded in mystery. On April 25th, she made a phone call to her mother in Arkansas, a conversation that would be their last. During the call, Penny was upset and confided that she and her husband of sixteen years, Glenn "Bud" Peeler, Jr., were experiencing significant marital problems. At the time of her disappearance, Penny was described as a Caucasian female, standing approximately 5'6" to 5'7" and weighing around 150 pounds, with long blonde hair and blue or hazel eyes. She wore contact lenses and may have had a scar on her forehead. The last time she was seen, she was reportedly wearing a red-flowered blouse, cut-off jean shorts, and brown sandals. The days following Penny's last phone call are marked by conflicting accounts and a troubling lack of clarity. Shortly after Penny spoke with her mother, her husband embarked on a trip that lasted from approximately April 27th to May 11th, 1990. Reports vary on the nature of this trip; some indicate Penny had told her mother the trip was canceled, while others suggest her husband was traveling with another woman. Glenn "Bud" Peeler Jr. provided inconsistent stories about his wife's whereabouts. He claimed to have last seen Penny on May 3rd, but the location changed in his retellings, ranging from a bus station in Sacramento, California, to a truck stop in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He also told Penny's mother that his wife had gone to visit friends in California and Arkansas, and that she had left during a trip they took together to Albuquerque—a trip Penny had told her mother was not happening. Despite searches of the Enid and Carrier areas by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, no trace of Penny Peeler was ever found. Her disappearance was considered suspicious and out of character. Penny's mother has long held the belief that her daughter met with foul play. While law enforcement has had a suspect in the case, the absence of a body has made it difficult to proceed with murder charges. The investigation into what happened to Penny remains open, a cold case held by the Garfield County Sheriff's Office and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. The conflicting stories provided by her husband, coupled with the sudden and complete cessation of contact with her family, have left a void of information and a family waiting for answers for decades. The case of Penny Yvonne Peeler is a collection of fragmented timelines and contradictory statements, a poignant story of a woman who vanished after expressing distress, leaving behind only questions and an enduring sense of loss.
