Jani Thompson, also known as Jan Scharf, was last seen on May 14, 2002, in Cameron Park, California. At the time, she was in the process of separating from her estranged husband, Glyn Scharf, but they were still living together. Jani worked as an emergency room nurse at the University of California, Davis Medical Center, and was planning for her daughter's upcoming wedding and other trips, making her disappearance highly unusual.
Glyn Scharf reported seeing her last on May 16, claiming that she had left the house early that morning. However, Jani’s car, a tan Ford Explorer, was found abandoned in Folsom on May 19. Neighbors had also reported hearing a scream from their home on the night of May 16.
Jani had previously expressed concerns about her safety, including reporting to the police that she believed Glyn was poisoning her. A year after her disappearance, Glyn was arrested and later convicted of her murder based on circumstantial evidence, although Jani’s body was never found. He maintained his innocence, suggesting that she had run away. Glyn later died in prison in 2007.
Despite the conviction, Jani's remains have never been located, and her case remains open in that regard. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact law enforcement.
