The disappearance of Arden Oliver Fuss began on June 30, 2018, when the six-year-old boy was last seen in Rhinebeck, New York. Prior to his disappearance, a New York Family Court had awarded full custody of Arden to his father, Adam Fuss, making Aleidria the non-custodial parent. The events leading up to Arden's disappearance were rooted in a contentious custody battle between his parents. Aleidria Lichau had made serious allegations of abuse against Adam Fuss, which were thoroughly investigated by multiple agencies, including child protection services and the New York Police Department's Special Victims Unit. These investigations ultimately determined the allegations to be unsubstantiated. The court not only granted full custody to the father but also declared that Arden was in "imminent danger" in his mother's care. Following this ruling, Lichau fled with her son, allegedly forging Fuss's signature to obtain a passport for Arden. Their journey took them first to Jamaica and then to Costa Rica, where they arrived on July 4, 2018. In response to her actions, a felony warrant for kidnapping was issued for Lichau on September 13, 2018. The search for Arden Fuss became an international effort, involving the FBI, Interpol, and Costa Rican authorities. After nine months, Adam Fuss was able to locate his son and estranged partner in Costa Rica. What followed was a complex legal battle in a foreign country. Initially, a Costa Rican court ordered that Arden be returned to his father, and the boy was placed in the care of the country's child welfare agency. However, the case took another turn when Lichau applied for and was granted political asylum, with a Costa Rican court allowing her to retain custody. The situation became even more complicated when Adam Fuss was arrested in Costa Rica on the same abuse charges that had been dismissed in the United States. As of the latest available information, Arden Fuss remains in Costa Rica with his mother. The case is a heart-wrenching example of a family abduction complicated by international borders and conflicting legal systems, leaving a young boy at the center of a prolonged and distressing custody dispute.
