Summary based on the NamUs case record (MP52774) and 9 other sources
In the late summer of 2018, a young man named Michael Heath Stephens vanished from Maryville, Tennessee, leaving his family and friends searching for answers. The 19-year-old was last seen on September 20, 2018, at a friend's house. His family reported him missing after not hearing from him, which was unusual as he typically stayed in contact through texts and social media, even though he had a history of disappearing for days at a time. Concerns grew when it was discovered that he had not picked up his last paycheck from his employer. Michael was a white male, 5'10' and weighing around 150 pounds, with shoulder-length black hair and hazel eyes. He had distinctive features, including multiple lip piercings and a rose tattoo on his right forearm.

The investigation into Michael's disappearance took a significant turn when authorities discovered that his debit card was being used. Between September 2018 and January 2019, Terry Lynn Nuchols, a 63-year-old man from Maryville, used Michael's debit card at various ATMs and deposited checks from his bank account. Nuchols was arrested in February 2019 and subsequently charged with multiple counts of identity theft and forgery. In February 2020, a jury found Nuchols guilty on all charges. His sentencing was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but in June 2021, he was sentenced to a total of 63 years in prison, with the sentences to be served consecutively. This sentence was also set to run consecutively to the remainder of a life sentence for which Nuchols was on parole at the time of these crimes.

Despite the conviction of Terry Nuchols, the central question of Michael Heath Stephens' whereabouts remains unanswered. The Blount County Sheriff's Office has stated that they are still actively investigating the circumstances surrounding his disappearance. As of late 2022, Michael was still listed as one of several missing persons from Blount County. His case serves as a painful reminder of the uncertainty and enduring hope that families of the missing face. The investigation into what happened to Michael Heath Stephens after he was last seen at a friend's house continues, with law enforcement still seeking any information that could lead to a resolution. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Blount County Sheriff's Office.
