In the spring of 1972, a 32-year-old Navajo Nation man named Paul Benally traveled to Winslow, Arizona. On an evening that year, he visited his sister at her apartment in the city. After spending a few hours there, he left on his own. His sister assumed he was making his way back to his home on the Navajo reservation.
