In the winter of 2010, 55-year-old John Koezuna, an American Indian/Alaska Native male, was at a family cabin near Cape Wooley, Alaska. On December 20th, he left a note stating his intention to walk to Nome. This was not entirely out of character for John, who was known to go on long walks and was familiar with the rugged Alaskan terrain. However, this time would be different, sparking a years-long mystery that has left his family and community searching for answers. John's family members discovered the note on December 27th and immediately grew concerned, reporting him missing to the Alaska State Troopers. The walk from the cabin at Woolley Lagoon to Nome is an arduous journey, estimated to be about 37 air miles or a roughly 50-mile trek by foot. Complicating matters, there were two severe winter storms in the region around the time of his disappearance. The vast and unforgiving landscape presented a significant challenge for search and rescue efforts, which were launched promptly but faced an immense task. Extensive searches were conducted by air and on the ground. Search teams in airplanes scanned the coastline between Woolley Lagoon and Nome, while snowmobilers checked trails, the highway from Teller, and cabins in the area. Despite these thorough efforts, no trace of John Koezuna was ever found. The uncertainty of which route he may have taken, whether it was along the coast or via the highway, added to the difficulty of the search. His case remains an active missing persons investigation, a somber reminder of the perils of the Alaskan wilderness and the enduring hope of a family for their loved one's return.
