Michael Otto, an 8-year-old boy from Deltona, Florida, went missing on October 22, 2013, along with his 9-year-old sister, Thalia Otto, and their mother, Yessenia Suarez. The disappearance of the family occurred amidst marital turmoil between Yessenia and her husband, Luis Toledo, who was the children's stepfather. The relationship had become strained, with Yessenia reportedly having an affair, leading to escalating conflicts between the couple. On the day they vanished, Toledo had confronted Yessenia at her workplace, slapped her during an argument, and later made ominous threats, warning her against seeking legal protection from him.
The last known interaction occurred when Yessenia took her children from her mother's home back to her own residence that night, despite initially planning to stay with her mother for safety. When Yessenia failed to check in with her family the following morning, her mother contacted the authorities, prompting a welfare check. Upon investigation, the family home was found empty, and one of Yessenia’s vehicles was located in a nearby parking lot.
As the investigation progressed, Toledo was arrested and eventually charged with the murders of Yessenia, Michael, and Thalia. Although no bodies have ever been found, physical evidence linked him to the crime, including traces of blood from both children discovered in the family’s home and car. Toledo later confessed to killing Yessenia but denied responsibility for the children’s deaths, instead blaming a neighbor. Despite his denials, he was convicted of all three murders in 2017 and sentenced to life in prison. The whereabouts of Michael and his family remain unknown, but investigators are certain that foul play was involved in their disappearance.
