On a stormy January day in 2018, the powerful and mesmerizing waves of the Oregon coast drew the attention of many, including 46-year-old Jose Rodriquez Alvarez. A resident of nearby Newport, but originally from Mexico, Jose was in Depoe Bay on the morning of January 18th. Witnesses reported seeing him near the town's seawall, a popular spot for watching the dramatic churn of the Pacific Ocean, especially near the feature known as the 'Spouting Horn'. It was there, at approximately 11:20 a.m., that he reportedly crossed over the protective sea wall to get a closer look at the ocean's display. In a tragic turn of events, a large wave crashed over the rocks, sweeping him into the turbulent and frigid water. The response from emergency services was swift. Within ten minutes of the incident, a United States Coast Guard helicopter from the Air Facility in Newport was airborne and searching the area. On the ground and in the water, crews from the Depoe Bay Fire and Rescue and the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office joined the search efforts. The weather conditions that day were hazardous, with the National Weather Service having issued a Coastal Flood Warning for the area, expecting breaking waves of up to 35-45 feet. Despite the rapid response and the coordinated search by air and sea, rescuers were unable to locate Mr. Rodriquez Alvarez. As the day wore on, the hope of finding him alive diminished with the setting sun and the persistently dangerous ocean conditions. At approximately 7:15 p.m. that evening, the Coast Guard made the difficult decision to suspend their search. Citing the cold temperature of the water and the perilous surf, authorities concluded that the search would not resume. Jose Rodriquez Alvarez has not been seen since he was swept from the rocks. Given the circumstances of his disappearance and the extensive but unsuccessful search, he is presumed to be deceased. His case serves as a somber reminder of the immense power of the ocean and the importance of heeding safety warnings along the beautiful but potentially treacherous Oregon coastline.
