On a summer afternoon, Michael W. Schmidt was enjoying a quiet hobby, hunting for arrowheads with a friend in a familiar, heavily wooded area of Pawnee, Illinois. It was shortly before 6:00 p.m. on June 10, 2018, near the 7600 block of Vigal Road where it intersects with Brush Creek. The two had separated during their search but remained within sight of each other. Michael's friend motioned that it was time to head back to their vehicle, and Michael acknowledged the signal.
Tragically, he never made it back to the car. When his friend could not find him, a frantic search began, and authorities were called for help. Compounding the concern was Michael's delicate health; at 59, he was not physically fit, had a history of cancer, and was unable to speak due to a tracheal stoma which required a breathing tube. Responders immediately feared he could have suffered a medical emergency, leaving him helpless in the woods.
The initial search efforts were swiftly and severely complicated by a dramatic shift in the weather. Within hours of Michael's disappearance, the skies opened up, unleashing approximately six inches of rain on the area. This torrential downpour caused the nearby Brush Creek to swell to a dangerous depth of ten to twelve feet. The resulting floodwaters inundated the surrounding timber and fields, extending 100 to 200 yards from the creek's edge with water that was two to three feet deep in some places. The flooding was followed by an extreme heatwave, creating treacherous conditions for search teams. Despite these immense challenges, a massive search was launched involving deputies, 40 volunteers from the Illinois Search and Rescue Council, K-9 handlers, and a cadaver dog. Searchers from multiple local police and fire departments, alongside local residents, combed the area, and divers were called to check a nearby pond to ensure every possible location was examined. Due to darkness and the inclement weather, the initial search had to be called off after several hours, but efforts resumed in the following days, weeks, and even years.
