On February 28, 2019, 20-year-old Matthew Anfeldt disappeared from the Rochester area of Thurston County, Washington. Earlier that day, he had been bowling with his sister and her boyfriend, and videos from that time show him smiling and laughing. After returning home, he was in his sister's room when he mentioned needing to get his cellphone from the main house and left. He never returned. What followed was a series of distressing events that marked the last time he was seen. Matthew was wearing a black and gray Chicago Bulls sweatshirt and gray sweatpants, but no shoes, and did not have his phone or wallet with him. He was observed to be in an agitated mental state, making statements about wanting to "hide." The evening took a bewildering turn when Matthew appeared at a neighbor's home, claiming his family had been murdered and that he needed to hide. Witnesses who called 911 described him as being in the midst of a mental breakdown. He was then seen running into the road, causing cars to swerve, and even jumped onto a car and into the bed of a pickup truck before running off. A short time later, he was spotted about two miles away at a Speedway grocery store on Old Highway 99. The clerk there also called 911, reporting that Matthew had blood around his mouth and was crying and yelling about needing to hide. Before authorities could arrive, Matthew ran out of the store. Despite extensive searches in the days and weeks that followed, which included pleas for homeowners to check their properties and outbuildings, no sign of him was found. For nearly five years, Matthew's family and friends were left with unanswered questions. The Thurston County Sheriff's Office continued to investigate, at one point looking into a possible connection to an attack Matthew had suffered a few months before he vanished. He had reportedly told friends that people were after him, but provided no specific details. The painful uncertainty ended in October 2023, when a hunter discovered partial human remains in the Rochester/Grand Mound area. The remains were found in a wooded area that had not been previously searched, several miles from where he was last seen. On November 2, 2023, the remains were positively identified as Matthew Anfeldt. The investigation into his death is ongoing, leaving his loved ones still searching for answers about what ultimately happened to him after he ran out of the grocery store that cold February evening.
