Introduction

In the summer of 1991, a routine Boy Scout expedition to Southern California's highest peak, Mount San Gorgonio, took a tragic turn when 12-year-old Jared Michael Negrete vanished without a trace. Despite extensive search efforts, his disappearance remains one of the most haunting unsolved cases in the region.

The Fateful Expedition

On July 19, 1991, Jared, an eighth-grader from El Monte, California, embarked on his first overnight backpacking trip with his Boy Scout troop. The group aimed to summit the 11,500-foot Mount San Gorgonio in the San Bernardino National Forest. As the troop ascended, Jared began to lag behind, approximately 1,000 feet from the summit.
