A Promising Life Cut Short

Luzeia Larea Mae Mathis was an 18-year-old woman living independently in Phoenix, Arizona. Standing at 5'11" with a distinctive tattoo on her chest, she was known for her independence and reliability. Her sudden disappearance in August 2019 shocked her family and community. She was last seen at her residence near North 35th Avenue and West Indian School Road on August 20, 2019. After she stopped paying rent—a behavior uncharacteristic of her—apartment management attempted to evict her and discovered a strong odor emanating from her unit. Upon entering, they found a gruesome scene: bloodstains on the walls, floor, and furniture, as well as cleaning products and incense, but no sign of Luzeia. 

A History of Abuse

Investigations revealed a troubling history between Luzeia and her boyfriend, Jamal Lamar Jones. Jones, a documented gang member with a criminal record including aggravated assault and burglary, had a violent relationship with Luzeia. In May 2019, he was arrested for hitting her in the face with a handgun multiple times after she refused to terminate a pregnancy.
