On April 8, 2019, Mark Terrell Fretwell, a 56-year-old African American man, walked away from a healthcare facility in Oakland, California, and was never seen again. His departure was unauthorized, and his absence has since become one of the Bay Area’s most quietly haunting missing persons cases. Fretwell’s disappearance is particularly troubling given his vulnerability: he had a history of drug use and was known to frequent urban nomadic communities in Oakland and neighboring San Leandro.
A Life on the Fringes
Fretwell’s life prior to his disappearance was marked by instability.
