On March 18, 1984, 24-year-old Martha Jean McNiel was last seen at her mother's residence in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. Standing at 5 feet tall and weighing 105 pounds, Martha had blonde hair, blue eyes, and a distinctive scar on her upper lip. She was known to wear a Timex watch, a turquoise ring, and a mother-of-pearl ring. At the time of her disappearance, Martha had a history of domestic violence and struggled with alcohol and drug abuse.
On the day she vanished, Martha left her mother's home with her husband, Arthur McNiel, and their two children, heading back to their residence in Clayton, North Carolina. This move was against her mother's wishes, who later expressed deep concern over Martha's well-being. Martha's mother, Jenny E. Joines, noted that her daughter was the type to maintain contact with family, making her sudden silence all the more alarming.
Jenny Joines, Martha's mother, was profoundly affected by her daughter's disappearance. Eighteen months after Martha went missing, Jenny expressed her belief that she would never see her daughter alive again. Her fears were compounded by the knowledge of Martha's tumultuous relationship and substance abuse issues.
A missing person report was filed with the Clayton Police Department on March 27, 1984, nine days after Martha was last seen. Despite efforts by law enforcement, no significant leads emerged.
