On August 7, 2017, the peaceful routine of a Waxahachie neighborhood was shattered when 79-year-old Leverne Berry vanished from his home on Wyatt Street. Diagnosed with dementia, Berry was last seen by his wife sitting on their porch in the early hours of the morning. When she awoke later, he was gone, leaving behind no clues to his whereabouts. This sudden disappearance marked the beginning of an extensive search that would span years and leave a community grappling with unanswered questions.
An Immediate and Urgent Search
Recognizing the urgency due to Berry's cognitive impairment, authorities quickly issued a Silver Alert. The Waxahachie Police Department, along with specialized search teams, canvassed the area extensively. A K9 unit from Dallas was brought in, and the dogs traced Berry's scent from his home to the vicinity of the Waxahachie Courthouse, approximately two miles away.
