A Routine Errand Turns Tragic

On October 24, 1997, 21-year-old Rosa Delgado and her four-year-old daughter, Rosa Marie Camacho—affectionately known as Rosita—left their Hartford, Connecticut apartment around 5:00 PM. Their destination was JJ’s Groceries, a nearby store where they intended to purchase milk and diapers. Rosa left her five-month-old daughter, Aleysha, in the care of her sister, Antonia, expecting to return shortly.


A Fateful Encounter

A witness reported seeing Rosa and Rosita conversing with Julio Camacho, Rosa's former boyfriend and Rosita's father, on a street corner in Hartford's Parkville neighborhood. Julio, a Hartford Police Department officer at the time, had a complicated history with Rosa, including disputes over child support. This encounter marked the last confirmed sighting of both mother and daughter.


Discovery of a Body

Approximately one month later, on November 26, 1997, two duck hunters discovered a woman's body floating in Columbia Lake in western New Jersey, about 180 miles from Hartford. The body was missing its head and hands, hindering immediate identification. The victim was dubbed the "Lady of the Lake." It wasn't until 1999 that DNA testing confirmed the remains belonged to Rosa Delgado.


Rosita's Whereabouts Remain Unknown
