On October 20, 2019, 53-year-old Nickolas (Nick) Randall Saling embarked on a solo sailing trip from Bellingham, Washington, to Cypress Island. Born on August 5, 1966, in Seattle, Nick's life was intertwined with the sea; he was brought home from the hospital to live aboard the family sailboat. His upbringing fostered a profound connection to maritime adventures, making his solo voyage that October day a reflection of his enduring passion for sailing.

The Mysterious Disappearance

When Nick failed to return from his trip as scheduled, concern grew among his family and friends. His sister reported him missing to the U.S. Coast Guard at approximately 11:30 a.m. on October 21, 2019. The Coast Guard promptly initiated a search operation, discovering Nick's 25-foot yellow sailboat adrift northeast of Lummi Island.
