Thomas Henry Saccheus Sr., a respected elder from Elim, Alaska, was deeply connected to his community and the land. At 70 years old, he was known for his participation in subsistence activities, including whaling—a tradition passed down through generations. Despite showing signs of early-onset dementia, as noted by his son, Saccheus remained active and engaged in his cultural practices.
On September 23, 2019, Saccheus found himself in Golovin, Alaska, approximately 38 miles from his home in Elim. He had been part of a whaling expedition that was halted due to inclement weather, leaving him stranded. Determined to return home, Saccheus is believed to have set out on foot, attempting the arduous trek across challenging terrain that includes Chinook Creek and McKinley Creek.
The disappearance of Saccheus prompted an extensive search involving local volunteers, the Chinik Eskimo Community, and specialized search and rescue teams like MAT+SAR. Despite their concerted efforts over several weeks, no trace of Saccheus was found. The harsh Alaskan environment, coupled with the vast and rugged landscape, posed significant challenges to the search operations.
With no evidence of foul play and the absence of any physical remains, a Nome Court jury convened on October 27, 2020, to deliberate on Saccheus's case. After hearing testimonies from four witnesses, including his son, the jury concluded that Saccheus likely succumbed to exposure to the elements during his attempted journey home. This legal determination provided closure to the case, officially presuming Saccheus deceased. ...Read More
