A Routine Journey Turns Tragic
On September 9, 2023, 67-year-old James Burk, a resident of Manley Hot Springs, embarked on what was intended to be a routine overnight boating trip. Departing from the Nenana River boat launch, his plan was to navigate the Tanana River and arrive home the following day. When he failed to return as expected on September 10, concern quickly mounted among his family and friends.
Immediate Search Efforts Initiated
By September 11, Alaska State Troopers were alerted to Burk's overdue status. Recognizing the urgency, a coordinated search effort was launched. The Department of Public Safety deployed HELO-2, a specialized helicopter, to conduct aerial reconnaissance along the Tanana River. Simultaneously, dedicated ground searchers from the communities of Manley Hot Springs and Minto scoured the riverbanks and waters by boat, hoping to find any trace of Burk or his vessel....Read More
