In April 2020, Michael William Crawford, a 39-year-old man from Homer, Alaska, embarked on a camping and fishing trip with his girlfriend to the Lower Skilak Lake Campground near Cooper Landing. After spending time together, his girlfriend returned to work, leaving Crawford to continue enjoying the outdoors alone. On April 22, he sent a text message—the last known communication from him. The following day, a hiker discovered his backpack, fishing rods, and dog near the edge of Skilak Lake down Hidden Creek Trail, where the Kenai River flows into the lake. His truck, a blue and white 1989 Ford F-350 with Alaska license plate JKE628, was found parked at the Hidden Creek trailhead.
Upon discovering Crawford's belongings and dog, authorities initiated an extensive search operation. The Alaska State Troopers, along with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Alaska State Park rangers, and the Alaska Dive Rescue Team, participated in the search. Aerial support was provided by aircraft from the Alaska Wildlife Troopers and a helicopter from the Alaska State Troopers. Despite these efforts, no trace of Crawford was found.
The circumstances surrounding Crawford's disappearance remain unclear. His last known communication was a text message sent on April 22, 2020. The discovery of his belongings and dog near the lake suggests he may have intended to fish or hike in the area. However, without additional evidence, it's impossible to determine what happened to him. The case remains open, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
Crawford's disappearance has had a profound impact on his family and the local community. Friends and family members have expressed their anguish and hope for answers. The case has also raised awareness about the potential dangers of outdoor activities in Alaska's wilderness, emphasizing the importance of safety measures and communication when venturing into remote areas....Read More
