On the morning of October 20, 2009, Joseph Jones, a 28-year-old fisherman from Trescott, Maine, set out aboard his 34-foot fishing vessel, the Bottom Basher, accompanied by crew members Daryl Cline, 41, of Machiasport, and Norman Johnson, 57, of Cutler. Their mission was to harvest sea urchins in the challenging waters of Cobscook Bay. The vessel was last observed around 3 p.m. near Falls Island, a location notorious for its strong currents and treacherous conditions.
Immediate Search and Recovery Efforts
When the Bottom Basher failed to return, a concerned party alerted authorities, prompting an extensive air and sea search. The following morning, the body of Daryl Cline was discovered near Shackford's Head in Eastport by a fellow fisherman. Debris from the vessel, including lifejackets and hull fragments bearing the boat's registration number, was found scattered over a wide area.
