A Quiet Holiday Weekend Turns Mysterious
On July 4, 2014, John Joseph Flavin, a 44-year-old resident of Kula, Maui, joined friends for a camping trip at a remote site known as Plenty Kiawe, located near Mile Marker 30 along Highway 31 in Kaupo, east of Hana. The area, characterized by its rugged terrain and sparse population, offered an ideal setting for a tranquil holiday getaway. Flavin was last seen asleep in his vehicle between midnight and 6:00 a.m. By 9:00 a.m., his friends noticed his absence, with his vehicle still parked at the campsite and no signs of disturbance.
An Immediate and Intensive Search Effort
Upon realizing Flavin was missing, his companions alerted authorities, prompting a swift response from the Maui Police Department and the Maui Fire Department. Search operations commenced on the afternoon of July 4, encompassing land, air, and sea efforts. Despite the deployment of helicopters and ground teams, the search yielded no trace of Flavin.
