On November 2, 1986, 15-year-old Ivan Barela joined his family at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, California. The occasion was the Vuarnet Pro-Am surfing tournament, a popular event that drew crowds to the shoreline. Around 2:30 p.m., Ivan left his parents at the south end of the beach to walk his dog. He never returned. Shortly after his departure, the family found the dog wandering alone, but there was no sign of Ivan.
Ivan's history included instances of running away from home, which initially led authorities to consider the possibility that he had left voluntarily. However, the circumstances surrounding his disappearance raised suspicions. The fact that he left during a crowded event and that his dog was found without him suggested that something more serious might have occurred. Investigators began to treat the case as a potential abduction or accident.
One theory considered by investigators was that Ivan might have drowned. Ocean Beach is known for its strong currents and dangerous surf conditions. However, no body was ever recovered, and there were no witnesses to suggest he entered the water. The lack of evidence made it difficult to confirm this theory.
Over the years, various organizations have worked to keep Ivan's case in the public eye. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children created an age-progressed image to show what Ivan might look like at age 39. The Doe Network and the Charley Project have also maintained profiles on Ivan, providing information and updates to the public. ...Read More
