On the morning of June 14, 2020, 28-year-old Clare Maney was captured on surveillance footage walking along the shoreline at Old Kona Airport Park in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, wearing dive fins. This would be the last confirmed sighting of her. The following day, after failing to reach her, family and friends reported her missing to the Hawaii Police Department, expressing concern for her well-being and noting that she was in need of medical attention .
Upon receiving the missing person report, the Hawaii Fire Department, in coordination with the Coast Guard and local police, initiated an extensive search operation. This effort included aerial searches using helicopters, marine searches with rescue boats, and ground searches along the coastline. Despite these comprehensive efforts, the only trace of Clare found was one of her dive fins .
Clare was known for her adventurous spirit and deep connections with those around her. A graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, she had previously worked at the university's Outdoor Adventure Center. Her cousin, Anne Rezac, described her as passionate, smart, and adventurous, someone who poured everything into her relationships and interests .
Before her disappearance, Clare had been contemplating a return to the mainland United States.
